This private street food tour in Vienna shows the down-to-earth side of Viennese cooking. At sausage stands and small snack bars you taste what the city really eats on the go.
The sausage stand, or Würstelstand, is a Viennese institution. Back in the monarchy, war veterans sold hot sausages from mobile carts, and later these became fixed booths on squares and near subway stations. After the opera, evening gowns and work clothes meet at the same standing table.
The menu features Burenwurst, bratwurst, the cheese-filled Käsekrainer and Leberkäse in a bread roll. There is even a special slang: order an Eitrige mit an Buckl and you get a Käsekrainer with the heel of the bread. Besides the classics, the tour also shows Vienna's newer snack culture, from kebab to bakeries with pastries to go.
Your guide explains the history, translates the local banter and leads you to tastings in the old town.
