This private beer tour in Vienna tells how the city gave the world its own beer style. You visit brewpubs, taste Viennese beers and learn the difference between a Seidl and a Krügerl.
Vienna is not just a wine city but a beer city too. In the 19th century brewer Anton Dreher developed Vienna lager in Schwechat near Vienna, an amber, bottom-fermented beer that was soon copied abroad. Big breweries grew up around the city, and beer became the drink of its booming working-class districts.
Today small brewpubs and craft breweries complement the traditional names. Many brew right on site and often serve Vienna lager, Märzen or seasonal beers.
Your guide explains brewing and beer history, tells you about taverns and beer cellars and leads you to tastings. You also get tips on which Viennese dishes go best with beer, from goulash to roast pork.
